It was time for their honeymoon.
The flight touched down just as the horizon washed itself in shades of coral and lavender. The island was small, secluded, and wrapped in the shimmer of turquoise waves — a place Abhinav had chosen because it felt exactly like what they needed:
A world where time moved slower.
Where healing didn’t have to be forced.
Where love could simply breathe.
Mareena stepped out of the car and froze.
“Abhinav…” she whispered.
Their private villa overlooked the ocean, its balcony draped in bougainvillea, lanterns swaying gently in the sunset breeze. Beyond it, waves kissed the shore in quiet rhythms.
“You like it?” he asked, watching her face more than the view.
She smiled — a soft, glowing smile that made something inside him settle.
“It’s beautiful.”
He opened the door for her, and she walked into rooms filled with white curtains, warm wooden floors, and fresh flowers placed almost everywhere. On the bed lay a trail of petals leading to the balcony.
Mareena laughed softly. “You planned all this?”
He shrugged lightly. “I wanted our beginning to feel… peaceful.”
Peaceful.
She inhaled deeply, letting that word fill her.
After years of chaos, heartbreak, separation, and fear, peace felt almost unreal — like a luxury she had forgotten she deserved.
Evening on the Shore
Later, they walked along the beach barefoot, the sand cool under their feet, the night sky stretching endless above them. Mareena let the waves wash over her ankles as she leaned into Abhinav’s side.
“You’re quiet,” he teased gently.
She fiddled with the corner of his shirt. “I’m happy. Sometimes happiness makes me quiet.”
He stopped walking and faced her.
“Mareena… you’re allowed to be happy. Fully.”
“I’m trying,” she admitted.
He cupped her cheek. “I’ll help.”
The breeze lifted her hair, and she looked up at him with that familiar mix of strength and shyness.
Abhinav kissed her forehead — slow, warm, lingering.
No urgency, no rush. Just love.
The Villa at Night
They returned to the villa where soft music played from the speakers — instrumental, gentle, like a heartbeat under moonlight. The balcony doors were open, letting the sea air sweep in.
Mareena sat on the lounge chair outside, hugging her knees, staring at the waves.
Abhinav joined her, draping a shawl around her shoulders.
“You’ll catch a cold.”
She smiled sideways. “You’re overprotective.”
“Only with you.”
She rested her head on his shoulder.
“Do you ever think about how different life could’ve been? If we never separated?”
He took a breath.
“Sometimes. But then I think… maybe we needed the storm to understand the value of the calm.”
She looked at him.
“You always know what to say, don’t you?”
He shook his head. “No. I just know what I feel.”
Their fingers intertwined.
Later, back inside, the lights dimmed to a warm amber glow. Mareena stood by the mirror, trying to tie her hair again, but her hands trembled from the breeze’s chill.
“Let me,” Abhinav murmured.
He stepped behind her, gently brushing her hair back, his fingers tracing soothing circles over her shoulders. She closed her eyes at his touch, warmth spreading through her.
His forehead touched the side of her head.
“Mareena,” he whispered, “these days… these moments… I want them to be ours. No shadows, no ghosts from the past.”
She turned, meeting his eyes.
“And they will be.”
He held her face between his palms, leaning in to brush a slow, affectionate kiss over her lips — one filled with tenderness and gratitude.
Her hands slid to his chest, feeling his heartbeat — steady, strong, hers.
The night deepened around them.
Curtains swayed.
Waves rolled in steady harmony.
Candlelight flickered softly against the walls.
The world outside faded.
And the rest of the night belonged entirely to them — wrapped in warmth, closeness, whispers, and the promise of a future they were finally allowed to build.
